Access to safe and reliable drinking water is a basic human right. Clean, safe water is indispensable to sustaining healthy livelihoods and ensuring that ‘no one is left behind’ on the road towards sustainable development.
Environmental Health regulates 21 small drinking water systems as well as recreational waters such as public pools, spas and wading pools in Clatsop County.
Clatsop County Environmental Health does not have regulatory authority over outdoor recreational water, however the following state resources are provided for reference.

We inspect public pools and spas for safety and disease prevention twice a year.
Why? People can get sick from being in unsafe pool or spa water or develop skin problems because of the amount and kind of chemicals in the water.
We inspect the pool/spa water chemistry to make sure:
- There is enough disinfecting agent in the water to kill bacteria and other microorganisms
- The pool area is clean and safe
- The filtration system is operating correctly, and
- All life-saving and safety equipment is in place and in working order.

Pool and Spa Operator Training
Certification of hotel and motel pool/spa operators is not required by law in Oregon, however, Clatsop County Environmental Health strongly recommends hotel employees receive training so they will be better able to:
- Keep pools and spas open and safe
- Store dangerous chemicals safely
- Know how to improve pool and spa operations, water chemistry control, and
- Improve health and safety practices.
